Given number fields LāŠƒKL \supset K, smooth projective curves CC defined over LL and BB defined over KK, and a non-constant LL-morphism hā€‰ā£:Cā†’BLh \colon C \to B_L,we consider the curve ChC_h defined over KK whose KK-rational points parametrize the LL-rational points on CC whose images under hh are defined over KK. Our construction provides a framework which includes as a special case that used in Elliptic Curve Chabauty techniques and their higher genus versions. The set Ch(K)C_h(K) can be infinite only when CC has genus at most 1; we analyze completely the case when CC has genus 1.Comment: Comments are welcome

We summarise recent advances in techniques for solving Diophantine problems on hyperelliptic curves; in particular, those for finding the rank of the Jacobian, and the set of rational points on the curve

REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS AND THE IMMOVABLE PROPERTY MARKET IN ALBANIA

The experience of other Eastern and Central European countries would suggest that in Albania, as the market for real property develops, there should also be developments in services that support real property transactions. A competitive and transparent market is usually facilitated by the presence of real estate professionals who bring buyers and sellers together to maximize the opportunities of both. These specialists work primarily through the collection and management of market information relating to real estate and profit through the administration of the process of submitting offers, acceptances, and contracts of sale. The appearance of such real estate professionals began in Albania in 1991, immediately following legal reforms allowing individuals and groups of individuals in society to own real property. This report examines the development of the real estate profession in Albania from 1991 to 1996 and is based on interviews and meetings with representatives of the key actors in any real property market: realtors, builders, urban planners, architects, lawyers and notaries, appraisers, and construction companies. The study was sponsored by the Land Market Development Project for the combined purpose of (a) providing insight on the evolution of Albania's urban real property market prior to full implementation of the Immovable Property Registration System and (b) assisting with the establishment of an Association of Real Estate Professionals, which could improve the professional expertise of realtors and encourage nongovernmental legal and policy research relating to real estate market development.Real estate business--Albania, Real estate development--Albania, Land markets--Albania, Land Economics/Use,

Assessing the Effectiveness of Automated Emotion Recognition in Adults and Children for Clinical Investigation

Recent success stories in automated object or face recognition, partly fuelled by deep learning artiļ¬cial neural network (ANN) architectures, has led to the advancement of biometric research platforms and, to some extent, the resurrection of Artiļ¬cial Intelligence (AI). In line with this general trend, inter-disciplinary approaches have taken place to automate the recognition of emotions in adults or children for the beneļ¬t of various applications such as identiļ¬cation of children emotions prior to a clinical investigation. Within this context, it turns out that automating emotion recognition is far from being straight forward with several challenges arising for both science(e.g., methodology underpinned by psychology) and technology (e.g., iMotions biometric research platform). In this paper, we present a methodology, experiment and interesting ļ¬ndings, which raise the following research questions for the recognition of emotions and attention in humans: a) adequacy of well-established techniques such as the International Affective Picture System (IAPS), b) adequacy of state-of-the-art biometric research platforms, c) the extent to which emotional responses may be different among children or adults. Our ļ¬ndings and ļ¬rst attempts to answer some of these research questions, are all based on a mixed sample of adults and children, who took part in the experiment resulting into a statistical analysis of numerous variables. These are related with, both automatically and interactively, captured responses of participants to a sample of IAPS pictures

    Longitudinal photo-documentation: recording living walls

    Get PDF
This working paper advocates a methodological approach to the study of street art and graffiti that is based on the documentation of single sites over time. Longitudinal photo-documentation is a form of data collection that allows street art and graffiti to be examined as visual dialogue. By capturing everyday forms of public mark making alongside both more recognizably ā€˜artisticā€™ images, and more visually ā€˜offensiveā€™ tags, we aim to attend to graffiti and street artā€™s existence within a field of social interaction. We describe a relevant analytic tool drawn from ethnomethodology and conversation analysis ā€“ the next turn proof procedure ā€“ which may be adapted in order to study street art and graffiti as a form of asynchronous, yet sequential, communication. This form of analysis departs from existent forms of analysis in that it is not concerned with the semiotics or iconography of decontextualized individual photographs of street art or graffiti. We present a worked analytic example to demonstrate the utility of longitudinal photo-documentation in making visible the dialogue amongst artists, writers and community members, and we employ the principles of the next turn proof procedure to illustrate the ways in which each party shows their understanding of the prior work on the wall via their own contribution to the ā€˜conversation.

High School Principal\u27s Perception and Experience with Student Voice and Youth-Adult Partnerships

    Get PDF
High school principals can foster student voice (SV) and youth-adult partnerships (YAP) while leading their students towards being engaged and informed citizens in our democracy. It is critical to understand the advantages and opportunities high school principals have in listening to and partnering with their students. It is also critical to understand the challenges facing high school principals in their journey towards SV and YAP. A qualitative multicase study of 10 high school principals from across the nation was used to understand the perception and experiences of high school principals in the area of SV and YAP. In addition, this study also focused on understanding how high school principals situate agency, citizenship, equity, and social justice within the framework of fostering SV and YAP in their schools. This multicase study provided a detailed look at 10 high school principals who had experience with SV and YAP. Individual case studies were completed which comprised of an in-depth interview with each principal, artifact and document collection, and observations of the principal or his staff engaged in SV or YAP work. Data was reviewed through these three approaches and analyzed across all 10 individual case studies to form the foundation of the final multicase report. Findings can serve as a foundation for high school principals to begin a journey into the emerging arena of student voice and youth-adult partnerships in their schools
